It all began from a love of travelling.
Whilst ambling down the colourful streets of Essaouira, Morocco, Gallery Director Stuart Dear was struck with an idea. Mesmerized by the dazzling colours and canvases these Moroccan artists had to offer, he wanted to bring back and share the artwork back home. Joining his history as an entrepreneur with his love of art, he began talking to the artists, local galleries, and exploring Morocco’s flourishing art scene. Tucking a few canvases under his arm, he soon headed back to Haslemere, and from there the idea began to blossom.
Though at first he only intended to sell the works online, the work was simply too good to have hidden away. With wonderful coincidence, a perfect space became available at the top of town: a shop with large windows, white walls, and brilliant lighting. It was an opportunity not to be missed! With the sudden expansion of Galerie du Monde, Stuart brought Caron (Picture Framer), Charlotte (Gallery Coordinator), Pippa (Gallery Coordinator), and Sam (Gallery Assistant) on board to help. As members of the team were taught how to carefully stretch and frame each painting under Caron’s experience and guidance, Stuart came across more artwork – this time from Australia and Slovakia.
By the New Year, the gallery was ready to go. On Friday 18th January 2019, Galerie du Monde was officially open! With Stuart’s love of finding new art, the gallery’s collection continues to grow. Look out over the upcoming months as the exhibitions change, featuring exciting new artwork from all around the world.
